Unit 1 - Platformer Games

Unit 1 is all about platformer games. Jumping, flipping, falling, and flying are all common mechanics in a platformer game, a game where the player jumps from platform to platform. It taught me the key points of platformer gaming design. One of the key points is space design, where you place the platforms is how you create the challenge. Another key point is how the gravity level in the game adds to how the game feels. The combinations of space and gravity make players try out a ton of different jumps. There are consequences to taking risks, like falling into bottomless pits. And, sometimes platformers use timers to put pressure on the player. This unit also takes you through the history of platformers, have you play some challenging games, and helps you come up with ideas for your own platformer game designs. For me, this unit was very helpful if you are beginning in the world of a game designer. I thought that this unit was very interesting considering the designer had the experience of seeing the history of platformer games. I saw games that I remember playing as a little kid and some I have never heard of, but it still was interesting to see games that were around back in the 1960's to the current time. I didn't know there were so many types of platformer games before I completed Unit 1.
